How do you know what species, family, genus, etc. something is in?
Classification of each group is based on specific characteristic, some of which you can see here. These classifications are based on an organisms phylogeny (expression of their genes). Initially, scientists used structures to classify organisms, but as we learn more about the DNA of organisms, we are able to better classify organisms based on their phylogeny. I made you a picture to better explain taxonomy. However, like I said, for Biology 20, you will be provided with a dichotomous key to use.
